Complete Guide

Start with the right return

Inland Revenue may automatically assess salary and certain other income, but some taxpayers need an IR3. Check the notification in myIR and any income outside the information IR already holds.

Reconcile income sources

Self-employment, rental and overseas earnings may require more work than a simple PAYE assessment. Keep a source-by-source record rather than mixing transactions.

Claim only eligible deductions

Private expenses generally should not be included as business expenses. Receipts and lawful apportionment matter, and the allowable categories differ by activity.

Tax residency and special circumstances

A person living abroad or receiving foreign income can have different filing requirements. Consult Inland Revenue before relying on ordinary-resident assumptions.

Secure submission and review

Use myIR or authorised channels, confirm contact and bank information, and save acknowledgement details. Avoid uploading tax documents to publicly shared checklists.

After the assessment

Review payment amounts, provisional tax requirements if relevant, refunds and amended records. Filing a return is not the last step if tax is payable.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone need to file IR3?

No. Inland Revenue automatically assesses many people. An IR3 may be needed where qualifying income or circumstances are not covered by the automatic assessment.

When does the New Zealand tax year end?

The standard individual income tax year ends on 31 March and starts on 1 April. Check the correct filing and payment dates for your situation.

What if I am a non-resident for tax?

You may have to use the IR3NR non-resident return rather than IR3. Inland Revenue guidance or a professional adviser can help determine status.
