Complete Guide
Start with lawful permission
Before travelling, check the immigration route and any permission restrictions that apply to you. Conditions for Irish, EU, UK and third-country nationals can differ substantially.
Register only when required
Immigration registration depends on status and intended stay. If it applies to you, use Irish Immigrationโs official instructions and make sure permission expiry dates are tracked.
PPS Number and public services
A PPSN is used to interact with tax, employment and specified state services. An applicant needs a legitimate reason and supporting identity and address evidence.
Housing before long-term commitments
Check landlord identity and terms before transferring deposits. Written records, property-condition photos and RTB guidance are helpful for understanding your tenancy.
Income, health and daily life
Set up lawful employment and tax records, understand healthcare eligibility and compare transport and childcare. Do not assume the same benefits apply to every visa holder.
Keep your information secure
A list can track the completion of administrative tasks without holding passport numbers, financial credentials or immigration documents in publicly shared notes.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone arriving in Ireland need to register immigration permission?
No. Requirements depend on nationality, permission and length of stay. The registration requirement is relevant to many non-EU, non-UK and non-Swiss people staying longer than 90 days.
Is PPSN automatically given on arrival?
No. You generally apply when you need one for a recognised reason and provide the specified identity and address evidence.
Can I use the same checklist for Northern Ireland?
No. This checklist concerns the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and uses different immigration and public-service systems.
